What was the theme for the project?
The theme for the project was to design a book cover for a Roald Dahl poem book.
How have you developed your ideas? How did your work change through the project?
I developed my ideas by looking around and gathering ideas from people around me and also by looking at images online and using them as ideas to create my own. My work changed in different ways through out the project, I decided to change my whole design for my book cover half way through as I came up with a better idea that I thought would work best and look better.
How much reference material did you find? Do you think you should have done more or less?
I did rely on sir's material at times, but I also found a few of my own too so I could have new ideas and draw different things to my peers, but I think I should of found more reference material as at times I didn't know what to draw and by doing this I wold of had more ideas of what to use on my book cover.
What artists or designers have you looked at to help and inspire you?
Scott Campbell is one of the artists I looked up and his work inspired me as it was all quite rough and didn't pay much attention to detail but still looked good.
What materials, tools and techniques did these artists use?
Scott Campbell used gouache on his work.
How have your skills developed during the project?
My skills have developed by I'm now able to look at ideas and make them better and I now find it easier to imagine what would look good and where.
Are there any aspects of your studies that you wish you had explored further?
Yeah there are a few aspects of my studies that I wish explored further such as, finding more images to use as ideas.
How have you used formal elements such as line, tone, colour and shape?
All of the work I did used tone, line, colour and shape, but I think the drawings I did in chalk i used a lot of tone to make it look more 3D.
What materials did you use, and why? Did they work successfully?
I used many materials such as chalk, gouache, charcoal, ink and etching, I feel they all worked really well I enjoyed working with chalk as it was messy and not neat so you get a nice rough result. I didn't really enjoy the etching as it was difficult to get it looking right each time and once you make a mistake you cant take it back.
What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful?
I wanted to show the fantasy side of the poem but also wanted the twist of the horror in the book cover.
Are you happy with your final piece? Are there any elements you like in particular?
I'm partly happy with my final piece, I know there are things I could improve on, but in particular I like the cottage I drew and the font I chose for my title, I feel that it works nicely.
Is there anything you would change? Why?
Yes there is, I wish i hadn't of spent so long on the drawings, and had more time to work on my book cover and get more comfortable using photoshop.
